Conditions of the low back such as herniated or bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, sciatica (leg pain originating from the low back), and general low back pain can sometimes be treated with this type of therapy. Flexion distraction both flexes and tractions the lumbar spine in order to promote disc healing, relieve pressure from affected nerve roots, and stretch lumbar muscles. Many times flexion distraction therapy is tried as a first line of therapy. It is a very successful procedure, however the doctor may also apply spinal decompression and traction therapy in conjunction with flexion distraction therapy.
